Year of Many Challenges and Hopes for Tamils in the Island of Sri Lanka: TGTE Prime Minister’s New Year Message

Year of Many Challenges and Hopes for Tamils in the Island of Sri Lanka: TGTE Prime Minister’s New Year Message
CHENNAI, INDIA, January 1, 2017 / —

It is with great pleasure that I, on behalf of the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), convey my New Year Greetings to all the Tamil people. Let us welcome 2017 with the fond hope that the blossoming New Year would present the Tamil people with favorable opportunities in their fight for the right to self-determination!

The year gone by, 2016, has shown glimpses of some likely changes in the international world order. The people of Britain voting in favor of exiting the European Union and the US presidential election have brought to light the growth of nationalism in the Western countries. The Syrian war has shown that the West led by the USA would not be able to handle world affairs at its own will and pleasure. It is discernible that the world political order has moved away from a unipolar, and fast moving towards a multi-polar, one. And this multi-polar rather than a unipolar world order presents more favorable opportunities to the liberation struggle of the people of Tamil Eelam. We need to look into it in detail.

In our view, the year 2017, as far as the Tamil people are concerned, should be a challenging year. The Government of Sri Lanka is going to make many treacherous moves this year. We must counter these treacherous moves by joining hands with the Tamil people of the homeland, Tamilnadu and the world over, and also with the international community raising its voice for justice.

The President of Sri Lanka in his letter to the US President-elect Mr. Donald Trump has urged him to drop the charges of war crimes against the Government of Sri Lanka. This makes it clear that the present-day Government of Sri Lanka, the self-styled Good Governance regime, remains a Sinhala Buddhist supremacist state with no concern for moral ethics. The Sri Lankan Government’s actions expose its ulterior motive of dragging on the time-bound obligation accepted by it in the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution, thereby burying justice deep. This is a treacherous challenge, thrown by the Government of Sri Lanka, to the search for justice. To defeat this challenge is a primary duty before us in 2017.

The next challenge before us in 2017 is to frustrate the deceptive scheme of Sinhala to win the consent of the Tamil people to the new constitution whose political systems fail to satisfy any of the Tamil people’s political aspirations.

The blueprint to be submitted to the Sri Lankan parliament does not recognize the Tamil people as a nation or a nationality, nor the North-East of Sri Lanka to be the traditional homeland of the Tamil people, nor the Tamil people as entitled to the right of national self-determination. The merger of the North and the East is not to be. There is going to be a miserly dole-out of powers concentrated at the center to the provinces, with attractive phrase-mongering, of course. The new scheme appears to be one that is not even going to get near the political aspirations of the Tamil people.

It is a Sinhala attempt politically to defeat the Tamil people by giving effect to the new constitution with their consent. It is a treacherous attempt to gather the votes of the Tamil people in a countrywide voting on the new constitution. The challenge before the Tamil nation in this voting is the danger of some of our Tamil leaders themselves saying the new constitution is beneficial to the Tamils, thereby hiding the conspiracy of the Sinhala state. They may tell the Tamil people, see, Mahinda Rajapakshe and his allies oppose the new constitution and we must defeat them. It is the treacherous Sinhala aim to exhibit that the new constitution has the consent of the Tamil people. To stop the Tamil leaders in their tracks from abetting this deception is the Tamil people’s Responsibility 2017.

If the Tamil people vote in favor of the new constitution, taking forward the struggle for the right to self-determination of the Tamil people would indeed become a daunting challenge. The demerger of the North-East would become permanent. The Tamil nation would get caught in the swirl of structural genocide by Sinhala and a dangerous situation would in due course arise when it slowly loses its identity. The Tamil people should be vigilant in this respect and defeat the Sinhala conspiracy. The longstanding role of frustrating the Sinhala conspiracy to dilute the Tamil people’ struggle for the right to self-determination by floating a new constitution belongs to the Tamil people living in the homeland. We are convinced they will shoulder it.

The Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam would be in the thick of action in activities aimed at frustrating the treacherous schemes the government of Sri Lanka is likely to launch in the year 2017. The TGTE would concentrate on activities for strengthening the process of seeking justice before the international community, and exposing the conspiracy by the Government of Sri Lanka in the form of the new constitution. We look forward to the support of the Tamil people across the world to our efforts in this direction.

There are no basic differences vis-à-vis the political rights of the people of Tamil Eelam between the present-day Government of Sri Lanka, calling itself good governance, and the erstwhile Rajapakshe regime. The latter would straightaway deny our rights, but the former would do the same citing the opposition of the racists, nothing more. However this government is itself full of racists, full to the brim.

As far as the Tamil people are concerned, good governance and the political solution the Government of Sri Lanka is supposed to offer are just illusory fawns, which would be laid bare in the year 2017, we are pretty sure. This would bring forth a situation favorable to the liberation struggle of Tamil Eelam. With this hope and conviction, let us carry on with our tasks! Tamil Eelam is the thirst of Tamils!

Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka faced repeated mass killings in 1958, 1965, 1977, 1981 and 1983 and the mass killings in 2009 prompted UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to appoint a Panel of Experts to report on the scale of the killings.

According to UN internal review report on Sri Lanka, over 70,000 Tamils were killed in five months in early 2009 and Tamil women were raped by the Sri Lankan Security forces. There are over 90,000 Tamil war widows and thousands of Tamils disappeared due the conflict.

According to this UN report, the killings and other abuses that took place amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Independent experts believe that there are elements of these abuses that constitute an act of genocide.

Members of the Sri Lankan security forces are almost exclusively from the Sinhalese community and the victims are all from the Tamil community.

A Buddhist Monk shot and killed a Sri Lankan Prime Minister 1959 for having talks with Tamil political leaders.

Tamils overwhelmingly voted in a Parliamentary election in 1977 to establish an independent and sovereign country called Tamil Eelam. This Parliamentary election was conducted by the Sri Lankan Government.
